Pastor Jeff is a member of the Synod Council which met the weekend of Sept 22-24 at the Synod offices in Sacramento. Click here for a summary of actions taken at the meeting.
A critical part of the meeting was the reconsideration of the structure facilitating ministry in our synod. The Rev. Jim Goldsmith, Assistant to the Bishop, describes the change in this way:
“You may be aware that two of our three Discipling Teams have had, for some time, larger “portfolios” than were manageable, and that there have been some difficulties in filling Discipling Team positions through the District Caucus system. The Sierra Pacific Synod Council met June 24-25 at the Office of the Bishop in Sacramento. Part of the Council’s work was to consider Resolutions that were held over from the Synod Assembly. The Council adopted Resolution 2011.04: Bullying, Harassment and Related Violence; Resolution 2011.05: Energy Stewardship; and an amended version of the third “Resolved” of Resolution 2011.01: Regarding Appropriate Pastoral Compensation. This is the final version of that resolution: “that the Bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod, presidents of congregations and candidates for call be cautioned against signing Letters of Call with compensation levels at less than Synod guidelines.” The new Clergy Compensation Development Worksheet and related materials can be found here.
The Synod Council also spent time organizing itself for its work. Pastors Adisa Armand-Miller, Newt Kerney and Jeff Johnson were elected to the Council’s Executive Committee, joining synod officers. Appointments were made for Council liaisons to a variety of ministry partners, teams and committees, as well as to each synod conference. A full summary of the Council’s actions can be found by clicking here.
Three new synod policies were also adopted during the meeting. Policy 2011-001 establishes a Fund for New and Renewing Congregations and Innovative Ministries; Policy 2011-002 creates a Gift Acceptance Policy for our synod; and Policy 2011-003 provides guidelines for a synod Investment Policy.
